Today's Gazette Editorial promoting the expansion of The City Of Montral's bike paths strikes me as severely innaccurate. It claims that the devastating, poorly thoughout, stupid decision of a bike path on de maisonneuve is being used by 3 600 cyclists a day!
Don't believe it! I have many clients downtown that requires me to make pick up and delivery runs down de maisonneuve almost daily. Since it's inception last winter (great timing) I have never seen more than three cyclists at a time on theat bike path.
I know, I know, you're probably saying that the bike path is very long, running east to west of downtown, but when I do my delivery runs downtown, I usually (90% of the time) take de maisonneuve from Bleaury street to Atwater, so I have a great visual to what is happening.
Let's assume that the de maisonneuve bike path is mostly used from 7am to 10pm. thats about 15 hours of the day. which means that on average 240 cyclists use the bike path an hour, which equals to 4 cyclists a minute.
ODD!!
Like i mentioned earlier, Driving down de maisonneuve daily, I have never seen more than three cyclists in any direction using the bike path. So how can there be on average 4 cyclists a minute using the path every day as claimed by the montreal Gazette editorial. And I am usually driving down de maisonneuve for a good 15 to 30 minutes daily, at varrying hours of the day.
Why is the editorial so flawed?
Why are they pushing for more bike paths?
Why do we not ask the merchants on de maisonneuve what they think of the bike path? They'll tell you how it has severely damaged their businesses, caused traffic head-aches, disrupted the quality of life on the street....basically made a mess of the area....at least during the winter, pedestrians have a clean area to wallk on, as there are barely any cyclists using it, and the city deems the bike path a larger priority to be cleared of snow than the actual street and sidewalk!!!
Very odd.....
3.5 million dollars spent, thrown away on something the city does not need, is ineffective, not compatible with our climate, a disaster for businesses in the area, a traffic causing hazard etc....
In all, the stupidest idea the mayor put into play since the Park Avenue name change debacle....
We do not need more bike paths. We definately need to get rid of the one we have on de maisonneuve!
Cyclist need to be liscenced, educated in the rules of cycling in a city, be taught some manners and respect and then we wold not need bike paths messing up our streets. If cyclists respected automobiles, street signs and traffic lights, if they followed the driving code as is required of them, STAYED OFF THE SIDEWALKS! and basically behaved with some civility, then all the streets (not sidewalks) would be free for them to use safely!
But we throw money away, mine and your tax payer dollars to build bike paths...for what? To pray to the shrine of environmentalism.....green this and green that....the only green I see is the color of money leaving our city because of idiotic, poorly thoughtout ideas that cater to a few and are anti0-business (the city's tax core).
Very, very odd!
